The Covid-19 pandemic is forcing universities across the world, to explore more than ever before the option of virtual learning. Perhaps, no tertiary institution in Nigeria is more aware of this necessity than the University of Abuja, which has the mandate to run conventional and distance learning programmes in the country. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, on April 27 , 2020, approved the set-up of the University of Abuja Virtual Committee to create a virtual classroom system where teaching and learning can take place between staff and students online, and linking the Uniabuja virtual classroom to the Uniabuja integrated portal such that students and staff who registered on the integrated portal will be recognized in the Uniabuja virtual classroom when they register to teach an online course.

The Committee which is chaired by the Director of the University Information Technology Management System (ITMS), Professor Olumide Owolabi has since submitted its interim report to the Vice - Chancellor, who promised to act promptly on its recommendations. Other members of the Committee, include Professor Yau Damagum (Director Academic Planning Unit), Dr A.G Umar Kari (Dean Student Affairs), Dr Aisha Sani Maikudi (Director, University of Abuja International Centre), Dr D M B Galadima (Director ICT, National Open University of Nigeria), and Mr. Samuel Osagie (ITMS Unit). Mr. Ogidi Kingdom (ITMS Unit), Mr. Yusuf Aliyu (Integrated Portal Consultant), are also members, while Mal. Alkasim Umar (Deputy Registrar, Academics), is Secretary. Speaking with the UofA Bulletin, Professor Owolabi said, "In addition to setting up the Learning Management System, we have quickly produced both a Teacher Manual and a Student Manual. We are trying to move very fast because, in the face of this covid-19, the University stands to gain by being able to keep communications between staff and students open all the time. By developing our virtual learning system, the University can join other universities around the world who have already adopted the approach.”
